Annual Club Picnic Announced

We propose to have the Annual National Capital Bird Club (NCBC) picnic at the Davey backyard in Oakton, VA on Sunday afternoon, June 9th from 3:30 p.m. to whenever we politely ask you to leave.

The Club will provide soft drinks and hamburgers and hot dogs (with rolls) and we would ask each participant to provide a side dish for approximately 20 people. We will be looking for cheese and crackers or chips and dips, salads and vegetables, beans, and desserts. If you are vegetarian, please let me know, and we will see what we can work out. (I love animals – they taste delicious!)

Please let me know if you will be attending, how many people you will be bringing (friends and family are welcome), and what food you would like to bring. (We don’t want to end up with 10 desserts and no salads.)

You are welcome to bring your birds – if you wish. Our Old Coonhound, Mosby, will be there. He is very friendly, and gets a little slower each year.

We think it will be a great time. We plan on having the picnic – rain or shine. Our screened-in porch can usually handle a crowd – if we are all friendly.

May Meeting Date Change

There has been a date change for our May meeting. Dr. Stahl will host a lecture on feather picking at his clinic on May 26, 12 -2 pm. Originally scheduled for tomorrow, Dr. Stahl discovered a conflict so the date was changed. The new date is unfortunately on Memorial Day weekend, but there was not a better option.

April Club Meeting Announced

March Meeting Tomorrow

I apologize but I haven’t been well the last few weeks and don’t have a newsletter ready or a program planned for this month’s meeting. I also haven’t read my email for a week so if you sent me any I apologize but I haven’t read it yet.

I suggest that for Sunday’s meeting since we have the free room at our new location that we have a get together and planning meeting. I am still working on the newsletter and hope to have one produced by the meeting or at least a good draft.

February Meeting Announced

New NCBC Meeting Place:

Fairfax County Mason Government Center

Main Community Room

John Davey has worked long and diligently to secure the NCBC a new meeting place and he’s found one at the Fairfax County Mason Government Center at 6507 Columbia Pike in Annandale, VA. He has reserved meeting dates that were available for 2013 for the Main Community Room there for our club meetings. The date for our February meeting is this Sunday, February 3rd. We have the Main Community Room from 3:30pm to 5pm.

Our speaker is Lisa Nichols. She has had a lifelong love of birds. She’s been a zookeeper at the Catoctin Zoo, involved in Parrot Rescue for a number of years, and for the last few years has worked in Pet Sitting.

I’m still working on the newsletter and hope to have it out late tomorrow evening. It will include the 2013 schedule, a write up on our speaker Lisa Nichols, and other various information.

January Meeting Canceled, New Location for February

Sorry for such late notice, but Carol has been swamped with work, and Wendy swamped by the “flu shot flu.” We have no meeting for tomorrow, John Davey has found a new location, the Fairfax County Mason District Government Center, for us to have our regular meetings in 2013. The Mason District Government Center is located at 6507 Columbia Pike in Annandale, VA. It is exactly half way between the Beltway and I-95 in Northern Virginia. Close to Carol and Elizabeth.We are scheduled there through June, pending any planning that goes on meantime.

This is great news! However, as has been the case with every venue we have approached, our birds are not allowed.

birds are! More information will follow. The next meeting has been scheduled for Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 3. We have a very different group of people now and this may no longer be the issue that it was in past years.

Our annual potluck holiday party is December 9 at the usual meeting time of 3:30. Please RSVP by calling Jeanne(Jeanne.Nathanson@ed.gov or (301)263-0770) with the number of people in your party and to coordinate the dish you wish to bring. It is also helpful if you respond with regrets, as we are trying to get a head count to be sure to have enough food for everyone.

Please come prepared to discuss a little Club business, and to renew your membership dues for next year.

As usual, the Club will provide a turkey, ham, rolls, soft drinks, paper products. You should bring any special drinks that you prefer, including beer, wine.

November Meeting (Today) Canceled

Sorry for the late notice, everyone. I have not heard from Carol and assume that we will have no meeting [today]. Just wanted to let everyone know, even though it’s the last minute and I apologize again for the late notice. We will be in touch regarding the Holiday Party next month. Meanwhile, Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope everyone has weathered Sandy successfully and with little damage. We are lucky down here compared with New York and New Jersey.
